Back Then

Jason flopped onto the living room couch, his phone in hand and earbuds dangling around his neck. The Sunday sun filtered through the curtains as his father, Dean, sat across from him in the recliner, sipping a cup of coffee and studying his son with a glint in his eye.

"You know," Dean said, his voice slow and deliberate, "back in the 1950s, things were... different."

Jason arched a brow. "Different how? Like black-and-white TV and rockabilly music different?"

Dean chuckled. "Sure, that too. But I’m talking really different. See, back then, men spent a lot more time trying to look pretty."

Jason blinked. "Pretty?"

"Yeah," Dean continued, warming to the topic. "Men wore bras and girdles under their dresses. They had garter straps to hold up their stockings. You’d see fellas crowding beauty salons on Saturdays getting their hair permed and their eyebrows plucked. Lipstick shades like Cherry Crush and Pink Rhapsody were all the rage for men headed to work or a night out."

Jason sat up a little straighter, clearly caught between amusement and disbelief. "Are you messing with me?"

"Not at all," Dean said, standing up. He crossed the room to an old oak cabinet and rummaged inside before pulling out a yellowed magazine in a plastic sleeve. He handed it to Jason. The cover read: Modern Man Monthly – August 1954. Beneath the title was a well-dressed man in a full-skirted dress, cinched tightly at the waist with a white belt, his curled hair adorned with a small hat, and pearls around his neck. He smiled brightly while holding a handbag.

Jason flipped through the pages, his mouth hanging open. Advertisements filled the pages: “Supportive Comfort for the Modern Gentleman: The Silken Hug Girdle”, “Lash-Lengthening Serum: Give Your Eyes That Feminine Flutter”, and “Brassieres Tailored for the Male Form—Elegance Has No Gender”.

“What the... is this real?” Jason asked, tracing the edge of an ad that showed a group of cheerful men modeling evening gowns in pastel hues.

Dean settled back into his chair with a knowing smile. “Dead serious. Society back then had a whole different idea of presentation. Masculinity was about polish, grace, and beauty. You weren’t taken seriously unless your contour was just right and your earrings matched your shoes.”

Jason kept flipping. “This is wild. So what happened?”

Dean shrugged. “Fashions changed. Times shifted. The ‘60s shook things up, and by the ‘70s the beauty standard flipped again. But the ‘50s? That decade belonged to the pretty boys.”

Jason grinned and looked up. “Kinda makes you wonder what things’ll look like in another fifty years.”

Dean raised his mug. “Probably something neither of us could predict. But just remember—every generation thinks theirs is the norm. Until someone opens a dusty drawer.”

Jason held the magazine like it was a treasure. “Can I borrow this?”

“Sure,” Dean said with a wink. “Just don’t smudge the lipstick samples in the back. They’re collector’s items.”
